Natureland's work with abandoned baby seals has become known world
wide and it's carefully researched rearing and treatment program is now used by many other rescue centres. Since opening, Natureland has dealt with, and returned to the wild whenever possible, many unusual animal visitors including dolphins and whales, a "lost" walrus and pelican, plus numerous oiled seabirds and injured birds of prey.
Natureland takes pride in it's commitment to the care of animals and welcomes the opportunity to share this knowledge with our visitors.
Life began in the sea 4000 million years ago. Since then an amazing diversity of animals has evolved to fit every watery habitat imaginable.
Tropical Freshwater Fish
These fish typically originate from the lakes and rivers of South America and Africa. They include the piranhas, cichlids and livebearers such as guppies and swordtails.
Piranhas are found in north eastern South America and the Amazon region. They usually feed on other fish and occasionally mammals and even humans! They attack in large shoals and bite off flesh with their sharp teeth until only a skeleton remains.
Coldwater Marine Fish
The large Sea Life tank exhibits creatures found off our coastline in the North Sea. The species in this tank may vary from time to time but rays (thornback), British sharks (tope, spotted dogfish), bass and whiting can usually be seen. Scan the rocks and you might see lobsters, crabs etc.
Pets Corner
The Pets Corner is always popular with its collection of really tame domestic animals. Goats and turkeys, rabbits and guinea pigs are permanent residents, joined in the summer by calves from a Lincolnshire farm.
These are the only exhibits, along with the Koi Carp, that may be fed by the visitors. The racks are always stacked with hay and at the nearby giftshop, packets of suitable food may be bought.
TORTOISES
Two types of tortoises are kept at Natureland - the Spur-thighed and the Hermanns tortoise. They originate from the countries around the Mediterranean e.g. Greece, Turkeyand North Africa and are now an endangered species due to loss of habitat and exploitation for the pet trade.
In the last few years baby tortoises have beensuccessfully hatched at Natureland and the tortoise enclosure has been redesigned to encourage further captive breeding.

KOI CARP
Koi can become very tame and can be handfed.Suitable food can be purchased from the feeding stations around the pool.
The Tropical House contains a variety of animals, mainly reptiles and creepy crawlies!
Crocodiles
Reptiles are cold-blooded creatures and, in the wild, spend many hours basking in the sun to maintain their body temperatures. The crocodiles at Natureland replicate this wild behaviour by laying motionless underneath the heat lamps for long periods of time.
Arachnids
Spiders and scorpions are not insects, but arachnids. Arachnids have 8 legs, never fly and don't have antennae.
Tarantula spiders have fangs that inject poison to disable their prey, however, the bite of a tarantula is not dangerous to man.

Reptiles in danger
Many species are threatened by the trade in skins for handbags, belts and ornaments, whilst others, including British snakes and lizards are fast losing their natural habitats and food supply.
Floral Palace

In one way the Floral Palace is rather like a large private garden. There are permanent features, trees and shrubs: there are also areas where a succession of brilliant bedding plants give ever changing shapes and colours. Hibiscus (Roasa sinensis): The national flower of all 13 states of Malaysia. Before the introduction of modern medication, this plant provided the people in the Orient with medical uses.
The Bougainvillea is the woody climber with pink and orange blooms that reaches half way across the roof in all three section of the Floral Palace. A native of central America it now has many colour forms and is plated in every warm country. It blossoms for many months but the flowers are worth a closer look; the true flower is tiny and yellow, the real colour provided by the big floral bracts.
Flamingos & Tropical Birds
The Chilean Flamingos are found in various parts of South America and can be distinguished from other species of flamingo by their pink knees. In the wild, flamingos get their pink pigment in their food, invertebrates and algae, which they filter out of the water through their beaks. Although we cannot provide them with exactly the same food as they would get in the wild, we are able to prepare a rich mixture which is just what they need to keep them "n the pink".
Sharing this section of the Floral Palace are the free flight tropical birds. You will notice a variety of calls and an array of colours.

The whole coastal area also offers fantastic facilities for budding tourists, including active indoor and outdoor attractions for young children. For the retired, the terrain is level, and is ideal for visitors who have difficulty with mobility. Much thought has been given to provide disabled access to all amenities and accordingly, Skegness is ideal for those who have "difficulty in getting about" but wish to take an active holiday break. The town is an ideal venue for the retired.
Between the beach and the promenade, there are acres of beautiful gardens that have become the admiration of the county. It is here that visitors can either explore, relax, or soak in the sunshine on a warm summers day. Needless to say, the tranquil atmosphere, and fresh air is pleasurable to all.
But there's more, explore the coast on the relaxing Water Way taxi, as it glides past white knuckle rides and superb gardens, slowly winding its way to the attractions at the North end of the promenade. Here visitors will discover Natureland Seal Sanctuary and tropical gardens, and numerous other superb attractions. The whole coastline is typical, modernised bucket and spade territory, ideal for families with young children. Complete with donkeys, ice-cream, candyfloss, and much more, the sands and tiny flowing beach creeks will amuse and amaze children for hours on end in a micro world all of their own.
Take a leisurely return from your Water Way ride on a horse drawn vehicle, a wonderful way to enjoy the open air, the sights and sounds, and the wonderful views along the whole promenade.
Undoubtedly the biggest attraction to Skegness is the fresh clean air, the miles of safe, extensive golden beaches, and clean sea. The town boasts of the prestigious European Blue Flag for water cleanliness. To enhance safety, fully trained life guards patrol the beaches during the high season.
Skegness, Ingoldmells and Chapel St. Leonards beaches provide miles of golden sands, just waiting to be enjoyed. In fact to the north of Skegness town, there are some 20 miles of unspoiled beaches to explore, which even on the busiest bank holiday may well be deserted. Whether you enjoy a beach with all amenities, or seek a secluded, isolated stretch of coastline or visit for the night-life it is all here.

Over the years, Skegness has been and remains one of the most popular
destinations for both family and retirement seaside holidays in the U.K. Extensive investment by both local authority and private resources has provided the resort with excellent modern attractions that are constantly improving. Coupled with a wonderful relaxing (or active) environment, level terrain (ideal for visitors with mobility problems), excellent night life, the resort provides an ideal all year round venue for all age groups.

Couple this with award-winning beach quality there is no wonder that thousands of visitors return year after year!
